Small Steps to Positivity

In the last couple of months, I, like many of us, have been following the actions of the new administration – reckless and thoughtless actions that have created chaos, uncertainty, alarm, and a negative impact on global health and the economy. We awaken daily to a new order or change to a previous order that only creates more chaos with implications far and wide. Strangely, there is a certain predictability in knowing that every day will bring something new – obviously not the predictability we desire nor that which brings us hope.

Some have chosen not to follow the news. The news contributes to emotional exhaustion and creates a negative energy that is toxic. We must be informed, though, because it allows us to control what we can, and find the ability to influence in some way an outcome – any outcome that has a positive impact on ourselves or others. On a smaller scale, we can channel the negative energy toward something with a more optimistic outlook, often as simple as being present in the moment.

Nothing can take away our ability to use negative energy in a positive way; it is something over which we have control. For example, when we use it to focus on well-being it ensures the negative energy does not become detrimental to our health. We know that when we exercise, our body releases endorphins, which improve our sleep, mood, and even our immune system. After a grueling workout, although tired, who feels that sense of elation or exercise euphoria? For a time, the endorphins help us view things in a more positive light, while improving our well-being. That is ours and cannot be erased.

Did you know that dark chocolate, which is rich in omega-3, also promotes endorphin release? I always feel blissful after I eat dark chocolate. I believe the United States gets cacao from parts of Africa, so I am “relatively” confident that there will not be tariffs on cacao from these countries. For now, I will enjoy my dark chocolate and experience the endorphins it releases. Eating chocolate is not really “doing” or taking action, but its outcome is positive, for some of us. Nobody can deprive me of its richness and slightly sweet taste at that moment.

Being aware of others with challenging lives, whether past or present, can provide a clearer direction on our path to action. My two most recent reading selections captured the lives of determined and intelligent women who persevered to ensure health and respect for other women (15th century China, and 18th century Maine). Learning about history through the eyes of these women, resilient in times of adversity, was a reminder that challenges can be overcome, no matter how daunting. Then and now, we have the strength and determination to drive progress and persist, no matter the obstacles. Nobody can take that from us.

Recently, I experienced the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico and its beauty and color painted in yellow, orange, and soft pinks across the sky as it fell across the turquoise water. For that fleeting moment, I paused, as does anyone who experiences its magnificence and awesomeness, and felt a calmness and contentment as I inhaled the salty air. And for a moment, as I remained fully present, there was nothing but positivity surrounding me. The sunset has a widespread presence, and its beauty cannot be undone.

We have, and will continue to experience losses in many areas, actions that are unconscionable. Ignoring the foundation on which our democracy was built will continue. I am not taking this situation lightly, but I believe that being fully present in the moment and self-aware of negative energy so that we can channel it into something positive, is a small step to provide support and well-being in these turbulent times.
